Diversity Committee

Burnham Brown's Diversity Committee includes attorneys and staff members from all corners of the firm.  This group meets regularly to coordinate and promote diversity throughout the firm operations, including staffing, recruiting, assignments, training, mentoring, community involvement and business development.

Minority Attorneys

Women currently hold leadership positions in several preeminent practice areas, including Estate Planning and Labor and Employment.  In addition, women attorneys regularly serve in management capacities and as members of the firm's Board of Directors.  The current firm operations include women and minorities serving in leadership positions in the following departments:  Accounting, Business Development and Marketing, Human Resources and Information Technology.

Burnham Brown attorneys are active members of a wide range of professional organizations committed to diversity, including the National Bar Association (NBA), the nation's oldest and largest national association of predominantly African-American lawyers and judges.  Similarly, Burnham Brown attorneys are also active in numerous Hispanic and Asian professional associations, including the San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association, and the Asian American Bar Association.

Burnham Brown also promotes an inclusive environment for gay and lesbian attorneys and staff.  As a well established San Francisco Bay Area firm, Burnham Brown has a long history of supporting this community.  The firm has participated in events sponsored by the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom, which is one of the region's leading gay rights legal organizations.  The firm has membership in the Golden Gate Business Association (GGBA), which is the nation's oldest gay and lesbian chamber of commerce.  Burnham Brown provides domestic partner health benefits to all its employees.

Diverse Clients

Burnham Brown represents clients that are sponsoring industrial development and modernization in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.  Burnham Brown was the lead sponsor in the recent event put on by the African-USA Chamber of Commerce & Industry where one its partners lead a panel that addressed human rights issues and minority business opportunities in the oil and gas industry.

The firm also regularly handles matters that involve Asian business interests that range from multi-million dollar contract disputes to complicated probate matters involving parties that have a network of firms in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea to draw upon.

Community Involvement

Burnham Brown is a proud major sponsor of the Alameda County Community Food Bank and is represented on its Board of Directors. The mission of the food bank is to alleviate hunger by providing nutritious food and nutrition education to people in need, educating the public and promoting public policies that address hunger and its root causes. Burnham Brown's commitment to breaking the cycle of hunger and poverty includes staff food sorting volunteer days at the food bank and food drive sponsorships.

The firm has long sponsored the "Adopt a Preschooler" program where participants select disadvantaged preschoolers in a Head Start program and provide new clothes and toys to these children.  The firm also founded a Preschool Book Drive to provide new books for "our" preschoolers at the Learning Center, and the Learning Center itself. Burnham Brown supports the Legal Assistance for Seniors program, which is dedicated to ensuring the independence and dignity of seniors through legal advice and representation, senior education, and the Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program (HICAP).

The firm also contributes to the City of Oakland's Neighborhood Law Corps. Foundation, which allows attorneys employed by the city to represent citizens and help them combat crime and neighborhood decay by utilizing nuisance laws and municipal ordinances.
